> Researchers in Canada have developed a non-hormonal, insulin-free treatment for hyperglycemia using a glucose-responsive nanogel. It can be injected to keep blood sugar levels within a healthy range, and could treat diabetes in insulin-resistant patients.

This may not be able to provide granular control like insulin can, but could be a boon for insulin resistant individuals.

Also, it is just now in animal studies.

I think the most promising aspect of this is the rapid response. Pumps, sensors and loop systems are great, but the slow action of injected insulin remains a problem. This might be able to bridge the gap.
