Yes, “downgrade” was the problem; in this case it implies that MDI is somehow a “downgrade” of a pump. Pumps don’t work while SCUBA diving, or at least they fail PDQ so the tech has limitations and that’s the most frequent case where I have chosen to go back to MDI.

“Impairment” is loaded too, at least in some dialects of English (I speak both American and, natively, English and I can no longer tell the difference.) “Disability” might be better but T2s use pumps and do not have a “disability” in US law. “Condition” is best. “Voluntarily” is still loaded by I don’t think it can be avoided; alternative wordings sound like something out of a legal contract, “Have you deliberately and by your own unforced choice.” Yuck.

> Have you voluntarily reduced the amount of technology you use to treat your condition.

Although there’s still not a lot of choice if you are going SCUBA dividing with a disposable pump…

Please add an option for “Not Applicable” here…we’ve never not used our tech.

“At times when I am not using my HET, I feel more insecure than when I do use it.”

Also, I’m taking it as caregiver, can/should I also see if my son wants to take it from his perspective also? 12yo.

I totally follow. There are a few aspects here: my first language is German and the items were originally constructed in German and it was hard enough already and most items went through at least 5 iterations. The English translation was checked by and discussed with two native English speakers and it was difficult/impossible at times to arrive at a translation that could be considered 100% identical in both languages. This was also the reason to not offer a version in easy read English, as it would have been too much effort, even if i would have liked that to be available.

The idea behind “voluntarily” was making a choice to reduce the amount or complexity of technology used because you wanted to and not because you couldn’t afford it anymore or something like that.

Impairment vs Disability vs … : the paper I write about constructing the survey and the results will be graded, so I am using the term “impairment”, as this is what the Prof. grading it uses. German academia isn’t 100% concise about that terminology in that specific context, but this is what will get me in the least amount of trouble 😉

Another thing to consider is also that the survey isn’t aimed solely at diabetics. Usually in science it is more common to narrow down the field but I had my raesons to go in the opposite direction.

Anyways, thanks for the continous input, I am learning a lot from that.

Hey, thanks for the input. That’s a good point, I’ll think about how to incorporate that.

It would be great if your son took the survey, I am happy about every participant who widens the horizon.
