Alcohol affects my blood sugar the next morning, i.e., instead of 1:8 for breakfast I need 1:10 or even 1:12 for carbs! Or a lower temporary basal, now that I am on a pump.
Reassuring! I was starting to think I was a freak of nature.
Yes! It was fascinating, although mostly if it was muted. The personification was a bit much.
I don’t drink often because dealing with the effects of alcohol is just too annoying and it’s an easy factor to avoid. Plus, I don’t like the taste of alcohol, and all the good-tasting drinks are full of sugar and I can never cover them properly without massive spikes. So now I have one drink perhaps once a year and that’s it.
I did drink more often (and get drunk) in university, though. At the time I was on NPH and had an A1c in the 8s and no real idea of how alcohol affected me. I was probably lucky I didn’t have any serious lows, since I had a very strong dawn phenomenon. It wasn’t until I started on Lantus and was aiming for tighter control that alcohol became more annoying and not worth the hassle for me.
Since I first had kids (about a bizzillion years ago) I just don’t have the time for the drinking and the recovery.
