another day at the pool; 2 hours of ZB and my latest BG is 102. I am really looking forward to a great swim. I am loaded up with the Transcend Gel Shots, jelly beans, and Gtabs. I hope that the pool is empty at least for a little bit .

if course I will report once I return!! :ok_hand:

WHAT KIND OF BGs ARE THESE ? EXPERIEMENT #1:

don’t know what the heck happened today with my BGs during my swim. I didn’t really do anything I haven’t done before. but instead of my BGs going progressively DOWN as I swam, they went UP instead. perhaps I took 1 too many Gtabs for my second leg. don’t know, don’t really care that much. just happy it was an awesome swim and that the pool was almost entirely empty. it was peaceful and very relaxing. a nice way to start off my weekend!!! :star_struck:

here are todays stats:

1pm bg 107 (2.5 hours of ZB; dash to pool)
1:20 bg 112 1 gel shot and 2 Gtabs
1:55 bg 96 2 Gtabs
2:20 bg 123
2:50 bg 132 bolused 2.4 units for 4 hours of ZB (added an extra .2 units for correction)
3:45 bg 109 bolused 1.4 for 32gms refuel

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. I won’t be back until next Tuesday bc of personal obligations, but trust me when I say “I’ll Be Back!”

NAILED IT EXPERIMENT #1:

WOW!!! today was a wonderful day in the pool!!! empty, quiet, and I made the best decisions I could, based on my last 2 swims. I needed a lot more carbs than I used to, and I am starting to get use to it. maybe I am just swimming faster, or maybe more efficiently and effectively. dunno. I should time myself tomorrow. that would probably be very helpful

here are today’s stats:

11am bg 94 turned off pump and pre-bolused .3 units
1pm bg 93 (2 hours of ZB ) (made a mad dash to the pool)
1:20 bg 90 took 1 gel shot (15gms) and 2 Gtabs (8gms)
1:55 bg 74 took 2 tabs
2:25 bg 78
2:50 bg 91 bolused 2.2 units for missed 4 hours of ZB; TB of 97%
3:25 bg 76 bolused 1.4 units for 32gms of refuel.

just as an aside, I think I may have had a short cortisol reaction post swim, bc I shot up from 91 to 124 right away, but without any correction, my BG went down to 74 within 1/2 hour. we’ll see if this repeats itself tomorrow. today’s was a hard and fast swim. I really pushed myself. I feel great now!!! Total endorphin rush

That’s wonderful! Your numbers are excellent, but the endorphin rush beats all!

DISAPPOINTED WITH MY NUMBERS BC I AM GREEDY EXPERIMENT #1:

I can’t, for the life of me, figure out how many carbs I am going to need lately, from one day to the next. just when I think I have found the magic solution, everything gets all screwed up, and I have to start from scratch again. its just so frustrating.

but, despite my disappointment with my BG numbers, I had a fantastic swim today. in fact, I almost forgot to get out of the pool to test my BGs on 2 occasions; I got so lost in my zone. ( that’s the kind of thing that really makes a swim of back and forth laps worthwhile :upside_down_face: .)

here are today’s stats:

1pm bg 83 left the house for the pool (2 hours of ZB)
1:20 bg 101 took 1 gel shot (15gms) and 3 Gtabs (hoping this would keep me from crashing)
1:55 bg 65 took 2 Gtabs, waited 10 minutes and then jumped back in; didn’t bother to test
2:30 bg 133 (OMG, how the hell did that happen??? )
2:55 bg 131 bolused 2.4 units (giving myself .2 units more as a correction)
3:25 bg 80 bolused 1.4 units for 32 gms refuel

and, as I sit here writing this (despite having already drinking my Boost Chocolate Shakes), my BG is 55. So I had some Sheep’s yogurt with my freshly ground P.B. I just need my food to catch up with my insulin  for my next post-swim refuel I won’t wait as long with a pre-bolus as I have been. I am extremely insulin sensitive after my swims.

One of the things I can see is a trend for the spikes happening later.

So let’s talk through this, and connect the dots on it.

First of all, are you well-hydrated? If you are not well-hydrated, the carb absorption can be delayed - particularly when you are exercising.

If you are not well-hydrated, some of the carbs you take at the beginning of your swim may not hit your system until later.

The next thing is the fact that a low after 2 hours of ZB is not the same as a low after 3 hours of ZB. The longer it has been since you stopped your basal, the less you need to bring your low up.

Another way of saying it - not all 65’s are the same!

Another thing - how hard was your swim today? is that spike only from the carbs you ate? Or could it be adrenaline?

Do not hate adrenaline spikes. Relish them as a sign of hard work!

Possibly…that 65 was you bottoming out. So maybe if you had taken nothing, we don’t know if you would have kept dropping.

Look at the numbers you posted.

You spent at most an hour at 130. Probably much less time. Maybe only 30 minutes above 130.

Realistically, that is non-diabetic control. Only 30 minutes? I mean, that’s probably the BG span a non-D might get from a large milkshake. :man_shrugging:

I’m very naughty. I do not hydrate until after my swim. next time I will bring a water bottle with me and leave it by the edge of the pool. water always brings down my BGs, so I have been afraid of drinking it while I am doing my laps.

I did have hard swims yesterday and the day before. I cranked up the energy level and pushed myself. I have been improving my whip kick so that I can go faster (but I am careful not to injure my groin muscle, bc that is what propels me through the water.)

I have to constantly remember this. the carb intake at 65 doesn’t effect me until the following stretch.

thank you for your insight; my BGs came down to 53 several hours later.

I think the trick for you is that once you get to 3 - 3.5 hours of ZB, you are probably not going to drop much more…

If you are comfortable at 65, and you don’t feel low, maybe try another 15 minutes without taking anything, and then get out and test again. Perhaps you’d still be at 65, right?

The only way to know for sure is to try it sometime - and test a little sooner, just so you get comfortable with doing that.

DM, try to hydrate well before your exercise too. Not just during!!

Oh, and here is a reference for the statement I made about how dehydration impacts carb absorption - just so you know I am not making this stuff up.

@LarissaW, I think this is calling you. :grinning:

I never knew that there was any connection. I only knew that hydration helps with sensor reading accuracy.

a BG of 70 has always felt like my safety net . when I get out of the pool UNDER 70, I never know how much to bolus for my basal insulin replacement.

any ideas about that? (I’m certain you have some!! )

I would bolus the same, and just add X amount of carbs to your post-swim nutrition to cover the low.

The X amount of carbs can be just a little more than you would take for a low at that number for normal conditions.

For example, if at 65 you normally eat 2 bites of chocolate when you have not been swimming, maybe eat 4 bites instead (as an example). But leave your bolus the same.

Make sense?

completely . :sunglasses:

FYI: normally, at 65, I would take 4-6gms carbs (1 Gtab or 1 square of chocolate )

In which way?? In that it could’ve contributed to how my number spiked after I finished my last race? Or in that you want me to be the next go to endo exercise physiologist??

Just out of curiosity, did you ever get anymore information about this?

I was dx with intestinal gut bacteria and put on Xyfaxin for 2 weeks. I felt a little better, but not significantly. then, I got it again and did another round of the Xyfaxin. no luck. I look between 4 to 6 months pregnant. its ridiculous. my GI specialist wants me too get a CT scan. I am seeing him today (Fridays, nov 22) in the afternoon. I am praying that he can help me. he might have to do another endoscopy. we’ll see. I’m generally a happy camper, but this is just miserable. thank God for my swimming. its the time I feel most comfortable.

thanks for asking!!!
