If you are interested in a thorough look at how the pandemic emerged, I recommend **COVID-19: The Pandemic That Never Should Have Happened and How to Stop the Next One** by Debora Mackenzie. The author was a biomedical researcher before becoming a science journalist. She looks at the history and science of pandemics generally as the context for diving into the current pandemic.

The book has an entire chapter on bats, bat ecology, virology, and human-bat interactions!
